Dear Internet,

For the last few months, I have spent some of my time learning about the different technologies that have come to exist, exploring them in theory but also putting them into practice. As the digital world rapidly evolves, it raises the question of its foreseeable future. However, in a nutshell, I hope to see a future of technology that offers efficiency based on trust, where it seeks to help people rather than overwhelm them.

The future of technology cannot exist without fair access. In Module 2, I learned that a good portion of the general public is unable to safely access content due to a disability. If we're moving towards a world that is greatly dependent on technology, such as smart cities, then having people left out of the system is greatly concerning.

Moreover, algorithms play a huge role in what we see online, even in ways we don't notice, as was highlighted in module 5. As the internet progresses and more data is created, we need transparent systems that accurately represent information without creating new biases. If this is not done, smart devices will make decisions that are full of bias and inaccurate information.

As per the findings of module 4, it becomes clear that cloud computing is valuable for collaboration but creates risk for data breaches. For smart homes and smart cities that depend on cloud systems, it is essential that these services are completely secure and also affordable.

Another point raised in module 6 is regarding the power of visual culture, which has already, over the past few years, become really competitive. With the rise of smart glasses and smart environments, the line between the digital and physical worlds will start to blur. To make the internet more ethical and accessible, it's crucial that people remain detached from a constant overload of information.

Finally, module 7's lesson regarding cybersecurity is more important than ever. As technology has taken over our homes, through smart fridges, cars, and thermostats, it presents more opportunities for hackers. Therefore, if more and more devices become connected, it's important to create stronger security standards.

In the end, to imagine a bright digital future, it's important to use our current understanding of technology to better innovate tools and systems. If we consider some of the points I have raised, then we can shape a digital future that is fair, trustworthy and centred on people's needs.

– A hopeful Student
